This movie theater chain won’t be so “Popular” anymore.
Overzealous “Leagues” fans who paint themselves to match Elphaba’s shade of green will likely be barred from entering the theater, as two unfortunate AMC ticket holders discovered.
This week, Jamie Forst went to her local AMC theater in Burbank, California, dressed in pink as Glinda, played by Ariana Grande, while her friend imitated Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, by painting her face green. Upon arrival, they were not allowed into the theater to see the hit musical.
“PSA: DON’T BURN AN AMC WEARING FACE PERFUME THEY WON’T LET YOU GET AWAY,” Forst captioned the TikTok clip, which showed her pal frantically wiping her face with a paper towel.
The video, which has been viewed 20 million times in a few days, is not an isolated incident.
“This is the dumbest rule I’ve ever heard,” complained content creator Celine Serrano on a TikTok this week. “Apparently AMC won’t let you wear face paint, so they’ll make me wash it off in the bathroom—whatever.”
In the caption, she claimed to have seen other moviegoers on the app attending shows on AMC wearing face paint, asking “why not me?”
Underneath both videos, viewers were quick to inform others that the rule is actually a longstanding policy of the movie theater chain.
“As a movie theater worker, it’s the pc of the dark knight incident,” one person explained, referring to the 2012 mass shooting that took place during a screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” in Colorado, claiming multiple lives and injured dozens.
“We have to be extra careful, especially since the new Joker and Smile 2 movie came out.”
“As an AMC manager it depends from building to building,” wrote another.
Some users even claimed that they were previously allowed to wear face paint in theaters for other movies.
“I bright blue entering amc for 2 inside out…” one person scoffed.
“I saw jokes with my face painted whattttt,” another upset viewer commented.
“I put on clown makeup to look scary,” said someone else.
Despite not being removed from the theater, it is against theater policy to wear face paint, according to company policy.
“Face paint, helmets, and full-face masks or hoods that obscure the face are prohibited,” states AMC’s online policy page. Similarly, Regal cinemas follow the same rules.
