A travel hack has taken the internet by storm with social media users discussing the dangerous trick.
“Check-in chicken” consists of flyers who wait until check-in is almost closed to reserve a seat.
The gamble is that the remaining seats that are more desirable will be assigned, such as extra legroom or an exit row.
A travel influencer who promotes cheap travel hacks posted on TikTok about her experience with airlines regarding “check-in chicken.”
“They hold the middle seats or the back of the plane hostage in hopes that you will then pay to change your seat,” the user said in her video.
She says: “If you sit tight and wait, what you’ll see is that everyone starts going, and the only ones left are the extra legroom seats and the ones at the front of the plane.”
Also known as “check-in-chicken,” the text added to the video said.
The user said it’s fine to check to see the “lay of the land” without selecting a location, but keep checking to make sure you have a location.
Fox News Digital reached out to the TikTok influencer for comment.
Adam Duckworth, president and founder of Florida-based agency Travelmation, told Fox News Digital, “Being a ‘check-in chicken’ will add 100% stress to your day.”
βTo do this properly, you should regularly monitor country maps in the last 24 hours before you go on a trip. For many of us, time is better spent packing and organizing everything around the house before our trips,β said Duckworth.
He added, “This trend will take you a long time, and you have to ask yourself, ‘How much is my time worth?'” And be very careful, because if you do this wrong and wait too long, you can lose the place all together.”
Duckworth suggested factoring the price of flights into vacation travel budgets.
Other flyers have avoided the extra fees when it comes to early boarding by trying another viral travel trick.
Dubbed “Gate Lice,” the trend has passengers cutting lines in hopes of boarding an off-the-beaten-track flight.
American Airlines has implemented a new system that beeps when a passenger tries to board the plane before their assigned task is called and will automatically reject the ticket.
The technology will be rolled out to more than 100 airports in the hope of cracking down on “gate lice”.
